The yarn of a lifelong friend intertwines with
our own to become part of a special shared story.
Friendships that build us up, hold us accountable, and make us stronger individuals are hard to come by. I am fortunate to have some really great friends whom I treasure more than any “thing”. Although no one can come close to the blood bond with my sister, these women are as close to sisters as people can be, despite having different parents.
One of those friends I met when I was 19 years old. We’ve been a part of each other’s lives through college, dating, dancing till the honky-tonk closed, days by the pool with margaritas and magazines, marriages, divorces, death of a spouse, and multiple cross-country moves between us. We love each other’s children as our own and would drop everything and come running if the other needed.
I started this blanket for myself. I bought the yarn last Christmas, and the project sat in my closet for months. I pulled it out to show this important friend, and she said, “It looks like you picked the colors to match my house.” With someone in mind, I moved the project to the front of the line. I had the fuel needed to keep me working until the last stitch. I found myself thinking of her and mentally loving on her every time I picked up the project. I should note that she didn’t get it in time for Christmas. She might just have to pick it up when she comes to visit this summer.
